January 2012 Blog

We had the ultimate Kaikoura experience last month from camping up the coast to an amazing day out on a 4x4 and Argo adventure, even throwing in a local surf casting comp!

Our friends Alastair and Anita at Glenstae Farm took us on their magnificent 1600 acre, third generation sheep and cattle farm by 4 wheelers and the boys by Argo (an eight wheel all-terrain vehicle). The ride took us through some of Kaikoura’s spectacular hill country and river beds, stopping for a brew in the lush bush. The panoramic views and native wild life has to be one of Kaikoura’s truly hidden gems. An exhilarating day out was had by all, thanks guys.

Travelling just 20 min north of Kaikoura you will find a fantastic DOC campsite at a nice little bay called Okiwi, or known to some as Sandy Bay. By permit you can hunt the back blocks or walk / ride the tracks. In a few short strides across in the other direction towards the sea, we were diving for pauas and setting the pots for the crays for 8 days. We met the M.A.F officers who were working hard out! We had some amazing fun with friends, ate too much and swam on the good days. We also came across a couple and their son from Christchurch who were escaping the latest aftershocks, off on their first ever hunt so we were so chuffed for them the next day when they came down off the hill with a deer and huge smiles.

We encountered some damn sh*tty weather while camping so when friends delivered our mail to camp a parcel from Ridgeline was well timed with some wet weather gear and fleeces! One item in particular this month got put through its paces with driving rain and chill factor both on sea and land - my new anorak. This puppy was lightweight, easy, compacts to nothing for cartage and great looking. It got a ten star rating from all at the campsite … I just had a wee problem hanging on to it lol!

Early January we took on the local Lions surfcasting competition, a great family day out with many rods in the water and some lively adventures had by some, just not us, on the day. Out came the chocolate fish, a rip tie and I handed in our catch lol. At prize giving I received a $20.00 Robbie’s voucher so hot chips all round.

Come join us next month as we take a road trip to the back blocks of Nelson to beautiful Peloris River Farm and see how the boys got on hunting in Hamner Springs and we might even squeeze in a trip on Dolphin Encounter Kaikoura! Enjoy what's left of your holiday time.

Stay safe,

The Ridgeline Family.
