Ngakonui Valley School Hunting Competition

Yes it is the mid term school holidays again and the Ngakonui Valley School have put on their annual hunting competition for all the kids in the wider area of Taumarunui.

This is a great event that involves the whole family out for spotlighting at night for possums, hares, rabbits, etc. After 2 very wet competitions we were blessed with a fine few days for this event. Entries and critter numbers were down a bit this year and it was a slow start for the weigh in. Once they started to arrive Mrs Beryl Gow, daughter Natalie and Shondel were kept very busy with the recording, as were Terrence Gillard and myself doing the weigh in. One animal that really stood out at this comp was the very large billy goat that had 92.5 cm spread from tip to tip, brought in by hunter Jack Bryan.

The ladies on the BBQ were very busy feeding the large crowd of spectators that had gathered to view the catch and the prize giving. A very big thanks to Ken McCann of Seriously outdoors Taumarunui, The Tool Shed Taumarunui and all the sponsors that support this event every year. The Ngakonui Valley School have a done a great job and we look forward to doing it all again nest year.
